Came across this at the Zone. . .I put the link here for your consideration, don't have any idea if it would ever happen, but it is JD speaking himself, so I felt it was worth posting. It's probably helpful to keep in mind that JD is usually pretty diplomatic when he's asked about roles he would take on, and he's often said, "If this or that were to happen I might do it." That kind of thing. Then again, maybe he really would do it, so who knows?
According to Jonah Hill, the Internet thinks his idea to adapt "21 Jump Street" for the big screen "is the worst idea ever." Well, attention, online haters: The original star of the classic undercover-cop TV series, Johnny Depp, considers the project a pretty good idea. In fact, he's open to making a cameo in the film.
"If we find the right thing to do, it could be very funny," Depp told MTV News while promoting "Public Enemies," his Michael Mann-directed film about 1930s bank robber John Dillinger.
Hill certainly believes he's found the right thing. "We wrote a really awesome Johnny Depp cameo," he told MTV News last month. "I talked to his agent a few times. I've never met the man. He probably won't do it, but if he does, it will be one I think he'd be proud of, and it's a real crowd pleaser. It's not cheesy."
While Depp's reps have not passed along any script pages to the actor, Depp is aware that Hill has been working on the adaptation. "It sounds like a great idea," he said. "It'd be hilarious."
Hill has promised that his "Jump Street" will not be a spoof of the TV show. "It's a comedy that is also an action movie," he explained, adding that it will carry a hard-R rating. Though Hill did not reveal whether Depp's potential cameo would have him stepping back into the part of Officer Tom Hanson, he did divulge that the beloved theme song from the TV series will pop up at some point.
Until the movie hits screens in 2010, the "Superbad" star may still have to defend his "Jump Street" adaptation to those folks on the Internet, however.
"I don't want to make some sh---y movie," he told MTV News last year. "I wouldn't want to do it if it was gonna suck, you know what I mean? I really think it's going to be sweet."
