Outtake

I first met Johnny Depp while I was still a student at Art Center College. I had started doing some head shots for an agent I had met and she asked me if I would consider shooting one of her clients for free. He had no money she explained but he was very cute and maybe I could shoot some cool stuff for myself? She held up a very bad headshot, I was not inspired but agreed to meet with him.
I did not really want them to know I was a student, so I arranged to meet him at a restaurant in Hollywood. When he walked in the door, I believe my jaw literally dropped. Wearing a black leather jacket, looking more rocker than actor, he really was (and still is) truely beautiful. He was also very funny and charming and poor. I had not even imagined he did not have a car and he had walked quite a ways to make our meeting. I did two shoots with him, the first, I actually turned in for a school assignment, which seems so funny now. During the second, going for a kind of boxer look, I shot this never published image.
Early Depp
It was in my portfolio, months later when I made my first trip to NYC and met with legendary art director, Marc Balet at Interview Magazine. He gave me an assignment for an upcoming “special” issue there and then. I was to shoot a bunch of up and coming young actors, including Andy Garcia and Billy Wirth and he added Johnny, after seeing him in my book. The top image, is an outtake from that shoot, it was rare that my favorite image is the one actually published. Below is the photo that was used and which, without much effort, I tracked down online.
I worked with Johnny one more time after that and have also run into him a couple times since then. He has always been incredibly sweet, greeting me with a big hug and kiss. I think somehow, despite his amazing success, he has managed to stay humble and not forget his early struggles. So very rare in his business. I am looking forward to his newest film, Public Enemies, which looks amazing and opens July 1st. He is also scheduled to be on David Lettermen Thursday night.
